Keep Your Home Safe While on Vacation

If you have a theft of your property while you are on vacation your insurance company will pay for the stolen items and damage of the intruders to your home, minus your deductible.  Some ways to prevent theft of items in your home are (1) have a neighborhood watch program, (2) video your contents in case of theft or fire, (3) have automatic timers turn on lights daily, (4) have a neighbor move your car in and out of the driveway, (5) buy a large dog bowl (even if you don't have a dog) and place it by the back door.  Call me if you want me to present these and several more suggestions at a neighborhood meeting.

Replacement Cost to roof, theft, etc.

When you have a claim on your home insurance for your roof, theft, or anything your will recieve 2/3 of the amount of damage which insurance companies call the depreciated amount.  Assuming you have replacement cost on your policy you will receive the full amount to replace your roof, theft items etc. to where they were before the damage when you have replaced your roof, bought the stolen items etc.  Then you will receive the other 1/3.  Your responsibility will only be your deductible.  If you do not replace your damaged roof, replace your stolen items etc. you will not receive the other 1/3.  If you have another hail storm and did not replace your roof or repair the damage you received the first time you will not recive reimbursement for the second damage to your roof.  A good insurance agent can help guide you through this process.
